At the 2023 Bioneers’ conference, One Fair Wage President Saru Jayaraman spoke about her organization’s work to raise wages across the country and mobilize millions of workers to vote. Since then, the One Fair Wage campaign has exploded, winning large minimum wage increases in Washington DC and Chicago and now advancing legislation and ballot measures in 15 states. Most importantly, in a year in which young voters and voters of color are naming ‘the rising cost of living’ and ‘jobs with living wages’ as their top issues, One Fair Wage has minimum wage increase measures on the ballots of several battleground (and other) states, including MI, OH, AZ and MA. It is Saru’s contention that we will not have the political power to win on critical climate and other sustainability policies without the engagement of 32 million Americans who currently early less than $15 an hour and are not able to focus on environmental policy until their basic needs are met.
