Film Screening: The Snake and The Whale
Over the past fifty years, four federal dams impounding the Lower Snake River in Washington State have been identified as the root cause for the demise of all of Idaho’s anadromous fish. The Snake and the Whale reveals the corrupt deals behind the dams’ construction and the subsequent campaigns to hide their role in this ongoing ecological disaster. Additionally, the dams have profoundly impacted a group of Killer Whales off the coast of Washington, known as the Southern Resident Orca, which rely on Snake River salmon as a primary food supply. These majestic creatures are now at the top of the Endangered Species list. Introduced by Outreach Producer, Raynell Morris (Lummi). Raynell Morris, a Lhaq’temish matriarch and enrolled Lummi tribal member, is the Events and Gatherings Producer at Children of the Setting Sun Productions and a board member of the Friends of Toki. A former Vice-President of the Sacred Lands Conservancy and Associate Director of Intergovernmental Affairs under President Clinton, Raynell was the first Native American staffer appointed to the White House. She also served as Chief of Staff for the Chairman of the Lummi Nation, and, as Director of Lummi Nation’s Sovereignty and Treaty Protection Office, she was a key strategist in the successful campaign to block a proposal to build North America’s largest coal port terminal on Lhaq’temish (Lummi) sacred ground.
Elizabeth Dunne

Earth Law Center
Elizabeth Dunne, an attorney with 20+ years’ experience representing communities, nonprofits, innovative businesses, and Nature herself, founded the Cascadia Bioregion Program at the Earth Law Center and has advanced many of the groundbreaking “Rights of Nature” laws in the US, including serving as counsel and advisor on the first court cases filed on behalf of ecosystems. Some of her cases have been featured in a few award-winning documentaries, including: Invisible Hand and Last Stand: Saving the Elwha River’s Legacy Forests. She was also closely involved in advocating for breaching of dams on the lower Snake River, authored a published law review article on the US Army Corps' executive authority to breach the dams, and co-launched a campaign with ELC and partners to recognize the rights of the Snake River and the Southern Resident Orcas.
