In this session Bioneers ally Taproot Earth, a global climate justice organization rooted in Louisiana, will bring together Indigenous women leaders from around the world to share their Earth-honoring perspectives and describe the extraordinary pilgrimage they undertook to gather waters from the Nile, Mississippi and Amazon rivers and return them to East Africa where the oldest human bones are found as a necessary spiritual component of their climate justice, Indigenous sovereignty and Black liberation struggles. With: Mama Iya Ada, Durham, NC community activist; Nádia Akawã, a leader of Brazil’s Tupinambá people; Phoenix Rose, New Orleans-based Ifa spiritual teacher and artist/performer.

Colette Pichon Battle, a generational native of Bayou Liberty, Louisiana, is an award-winning lawyer and prominent climate justice organizer. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when Black and Indigenous communities were largely left out of federal recovery systems, Colette led the Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy (GCCLP) to provide relief and legal assistance to Gulf South communities of color. After 17 years at GCCLP’s helm, as frontline communities from the Gulf South to the Global South face ever more devastating storms, droughts, wildfires, heat, and land loss, she co-founded Taproot Earth to create connections and power across issues, movements, and geographies.

Phoenix Rose, a first-generation Jamaican-American New Orleans-based artist, beauty professional, and Ìyánifá (a priestess in the Yorùbá Ifá-Òrìṣà tradition), is the owner and lead artist of Phoenix Rose Artistry LLC. She has long worked as a makeup and hair artist in a wide range of settings including film and theater, and is also a dancer and singer/songwriter who performs under the name Huebian.

Mama Iya Ada (formerly known as Nia Wilson), with a background in pediatric and psychiatric nursing, has worked with teens and their families in drop-out, drug and pregnancy prevention in Durham, North Carolina, since 1998. She also served as Co-Director of SpiritHouse until recently as well as Senior Advisor for the Forward Justice Law Policy and Strategy Center since 2017.
